The cataloguing of the manuscripts in the NBM conforms to Guida a una descrizione uniforme dei manoscritti e al loro censimento, Roma 1990, together with the Guida a Nuova Biblioteca Manoscritta.
For standard names the Regole italiane di catalogazione per Autori, Roma 1979 (anche also online) were followed and the Guida alla catalogazione in SBN, pubblicazioni monografiche, pubblicazioni in serie, Roma 1995, 187-208, was also adopted with regard to symbols and punctuation.
In all cases the author entries include birth and death dates, except for the Classical authors.
When users search the database, they are first provided with a summary description of the manuscript, from which they then choose the descriptions to be consulted.
The results of the search are listed alphabetically by city, library and shelfmark.
The brief information is accompanied by the dating, and the result of the search can be ordered chronologically, as well as by shelfmark.
In the search by word the description extract highlights the keyword.
Information on the manuscript holdings catalogued in NBM and on other finding aids can be found in the section on libraries.
